Cabbage Leather Coral

Can a Pumpkin turn into a Showpiece ? 


This leather coral is rated as an easy beginner's choice (like so many potential centrepieces)... Oh there's no doubt about it's capacity to adapt to incalculable conditions and still stick around... It's all to it's credit and not the Aquarist's however...  If you browse image banks you will discover that some Aquarists around the globe have demonstrated their capacity to turn this Sinularia into fountains of fluorescent colors and minuxcule polyps ! At SBMarine we would like to achieve such results eventually...  I'm sure EOS is thrilled by this perspective   :)

This is our subject three hours after being placed in tank... It started unfolding already and clearly shows on the right side that it bears a Zooxanthella colony... 

Next morning the left side started deploying with a section standing straight... So it doesn't seem bothered by the Caulerpas who some say might emit inhibiting substances...

The toxicity of Caulerpa species towards soft corals remains largely hypothetical... What we know for a fact is that they can prove extremely beneficial !!!  Many would have added Iodine supplements to this tank considering the bundled shape of this specimen... Sorry to inform you that most corals can't absorb medicinal Iodine (pharmaceutical grade). Iodine dips will kill most Anemones by the way. IODIDE compounds are the natural occuring compounds that can benefit corals (Iodide 1 - Iodide 2 - Iodide 3, for example) but selecting the right type and dosing it remains a complex issue... For your information most Algae procuce one sort of Iodide or another in a natural form that can be absorbed by some Corals. We like to keep it simple here at SBMarine. So this Marine Biological System will remain additive free as usual.

Cabbage Leather is an amazing contortionist that can contract, bend, twist, reorient and reshape itself in any direction... The process takes time and it won't really start growing until it settles into it's definitive configuration... So moving them around is not a very good idea at any time once they are fully established in a tank. Meaning that it is best to always install them in their permanent display location.
