Oxygen Reactor

 Simplicity above all 


The SBMarine Oxygen Reactor has no moving parts, which makes it extremely reliable. Apart from an optional rotary nozzle which can direct the water at an angle of 45 degrees down ... Pressure and gravity do all the work. The first thing that one notices is that it does not seem level. Indeed, a properly installed reactor will always have an upward angle at its end. This detail increases pressure inside the Forced Mixing Chamber; creating de facto a powerful turbulent vortex. This allows a better interraction between the toxic gas that must be evacuated (ammonia) and minuxcule air bubbles with which it will be forced to bind. Micro bubbles are then propelled out of the mixing chamber through a series of perforations on each side. There they head immediately to the water surface and explode in the open: freeing up their toxic cargo that evaporates in the air, OUT OF THE AQUARIUM !!!! This is  the perfect solution to remove ammonia in a radical and definitive manner. Without using toxic resins, absorbent granules that yield questionable results or complex methods of chemical filtration that I willingly leave to technocrats...

Gas exchanges, in a tank, always occur at the surface:

where ambient air and tank water meet ...

When bursting at the water surface, toxic bubbles also act on oxygenation of the tank ! At that moment :water absorbs additional oxygen (drawn from the ambient air). The gas exchange at water surface is therefore carried out in two distinct and positive ways through the SBMarine Oxygen Reactor. Initially the ammonia is removed, then the water is enriched with oxygen through the secondary gas exchange ... It provides ample breathing oxygen for all occupants. Fish, invertebrates, corals, anemones, aerobic bacteria, copepods, amphipods can only thrive in optimal conditions ... And never suffer the devastating and highly toxic effects of ammonia.

The primary function of an SBMarine Oxygen Reactor is to maximize the removal of ammonia through the water surface. All gases are soluble in water, ammonia is definitely the most toxic of all and the most difficult to eliminate. It's the one that has the most negative impact on Biological Filtration and the most devastating effects on the health of fish and invertebrates. But above all, you should know that ammonia is also soluble in the air. That is why we must give a brief overview of its atmospheric properties. You must also remember that Air and Oxygen are not synonymous: this will avoid confusion in understanding many applications apart from this one ...

To the definition of suffocating gas, I might add; lethal in the case of high concentrations. And it is precisely the dilemma that arises with this heavy gas; it does not easily dissipate into the atmosphere and has a tendency to remain grounded even with strong winds, sometimes pushing it over tens of miles. Until the 1970’s, the liquid ammonia transport industry; assumed that in case of an accident, ammonia would naturally evaporate quickly into the atmosphere. The Canadian government demonstrated otherwise, through a practical experience. On the contrary, inhabitants of areas affected by accidents of this nature would be decimated in atrocious conditions ...
So they literally exploded, in the heart of the American Salt Flats; a tanker truck filled with liquid ammonia... The toxic cloud remained nailed to the ground and moved on dozens of miles still in very high concentrations. If this incident had taken place, say in a village of 10,000 inhabitants; they would have been decimated in minutes: their lungs instantly burned by the gas. This proved beyond doubt that transportation standards should be established based on this discovery.
Ammonia is no better when dissolved in water, alas. It has the same bad habit of accumulating at the tank’s bottom and remain there ! Power Heads won’t change much since they redistribute it in the tank where it will fall constantly back to the gravel bed ... There are many so-called miracle chemical processes on the market to remove ammonia… I’m sure there are…  :)
So how can you extract it out of the water and eliminate it directly in the air ??? I confess that I have long sought the answer ... Until, by chance,  a scientific publication aroused my interest and reached my neuron. This researcher had noticed the natural property of ammonia, dissolved in water, to attach (bind itself) to very fine (minuxcules) air bubbles !!!
Fantastic, but it's impossible to disseminate fine air bubbles in a gravel or coral sand bed; even less in the substrate .... It is at this stage that the Oxygen Reactor appeared in my neuron….
It is therefore necessary to pump water from below (SBMarine Filter) to bring it to the surface in a path confined inside tubes (ammonia follows). Ammonia must then be forced into contact with micro bubbles in a Forced Reaction Chamber: hence the term Reactor !! However, this process must occur at the surface; Once charged with Ammonia the Micro Bubbles immediately burst at the surface where the deadly gas is released into the atmosphere !!

We will see in a few months how the word oxygen came into the definition…  This time there is no link with ammonia, but with the REDOX (reduction / oxygen process). The SBMarine Oxygen Reactor is full of surprises and various applications. For now, the only prototype will be used for various projects.

There is always an angle of incidence to the Forced Mixing Chamber. Gravity constantly represses the micro bubbles back to the Vortex: Optimizing interraction with ammonia. Otherwise the bubbles would be rejected directly through the secondary water outlet.

Live Rock & Biological Filtration

what are the true benefits 

The reefer community has elevated Live Rock to the status of real biological filtration and it does represent such potential in a sterile tank. However this capacity is limited by the development of a Bio Film at it's surface thus reducing water flow through it... Several methods of eliminating this - protective coating of detritus of all sorts - exist but are all temporary. However if you combine the use of Live Rock for aquascaping with a - working - Biological Filtration System : you get a Marine Biological System !!! 

The beauty of it all is that all existing Marine Life forms (flora & fauna) on and within the Live Rock now have a chance of developping... They would simply be destroyed in a traditional Sterile Reef tank...
